UCOP HR Update; June 5, 2009

Annual June Compensatory Time Off Election Period

The collective bargaining agreements between the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE), Coalition of University Employees (CUE), and American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the University provide that departments that offer compensatory time off must offer their technical (TX), clerical (CX), and service (SX) bargaining unit employees the opportunity to make an election for overtime compensation. The opportunity to choose either pay or compensatory time off (CTO) is made when hired and thereafter during the month of June. Although the contracts covering employees in the CX and TX units have expired, CUE and UPTE have agreed to allow CTO programs to continue during the status quo period.

For fiscal year 2009/2010, the employee’s election period is June 1, 2009 through June 30, 2009. For any elections made during the month of June, the employee’s election will become effective July 1, 2009.

If employees in the TX unit do not make an election during the annual June period, their previous election shall continue. If employees in the CX or SX units do not make an election during the June period, they will receive pay for any overtime worked.

To obtain copies of the election forms, or if you have any questions, please contact Jeanie Urban in Employee/Labor Relations at 510-987-0237 or Jeanie.Urban@ucop.edu. Please ensure that employees are provided the applicable form in order to make the election.

New Work Injury Reporting Hotline

As a reminder, reporting a work-related injury has become easier. Supervisors, managers, and staff can now call a toll-free number to report any injury. This new reporting service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Of course, employees should continue to promptly inform their supervisor if they have been injured, and, in an emergency, urgent medical care should be sought immediately.

The new hotline will improve efficiency, expedite claims service, and reduce paperwork. Effective immediately, supervisors and employees reporting a work injury should call the following number:

877-6UC-RPRT (877-682-7778)
