When to Check References
When to check references
During or after all the interviews ask the interviewees for a list of references. It is recommended that references not be checked prior to completion of all the interviews and determination of the final candidate. You do not want to create false expectations that can have a "chilling" effect on your ability to objectively evaluate an applicant's qualifications. Allow the applicant to be evaluated on his/her presentation of qualifications prior to verifying the information received during the interview.
Top Candidates Only
It is not necessary to check reference on other than the top candidates. Check references on other candidates only if the references of the top candidate yielded information that would cause a re-evaluation of the selection decision.
