UCOP Restructuring Update for Week of October 20, 2008
October 21, 2008
- Systemwide Budget and Facilities Administration
- External Relations/Communications presentation
- Upcoming brown bag meetings
- Reminder of job openings
Colleagues,
The new structure of UCOP continues to take shape as we finalize the designs of new units and recruit to fill redefined positions. To bring you up to date on the progress, our series of brown bag sessions resumes with sessions this week, and additional sessions the week of October 27 - details about the brown bags are below. First, we have an announcement about an organizational change in Business Operations.
Systemwide Budget and Facilities Administration
Following several extensive evaluations over the last several months of Facilities Administration and the Systemwide Budget office, the most recent of which was headed by UC Davis Vice Chancellor John Meyer, I have decided to combine these two departments into a single organizational unit with a focus on overall resource management and stewardship. I firmly believe that this structure will enhance the manner in which the Office of the President fulfills its central responsibility and also will better assist the campuses to achieve their objectives.
Vice President Patrick Lenz will lead the new unit, which will ensure coordination among the planning, design, delivery, operations and maintenance of capital assets. Debora Obley and Michael Bocchicchio will report to Patrick and will be responsible for resource planning and capital asset management, respectively. Assisting in the implementation of this new office structure will be Steve Mathews, who since his retirement from the University has been serving as a consultant advisor to the Office of Loan Programs. Over the next several months, Steve will help Patrick to develop an organizational structure and staffing model that will best meet the needc to plan and steward capital assets. He will also help to determine if there are existing functions that should be reconfigured to allow this new organization to focus on larger and more strategic systemwide resource management issues. We will keep you advised as the new department takes shape.
External Relations/Communications presentations
This week's brown bag meetings will feature an overview of External Relations presented by Senior Vice President Alan Hoffman, with special focus on the new, consolidated Communications unit. Recruitment is underway now for six leadership positions in Communications, and it's anticipated that a number of the remaining staff positions will be posted within the next two weeks. This week s brown bags will also include a discussion of the new Divisional Coordinator positions now open for applications.

New brown bag meetings scheduled

SPPA is a new, consolidated unit created within Academic Affairs to conduct long-range and strategic academic planning, manage the University's accountability framework, and provide oversight for selected systemwide services.
