UCOP Update for Week of April 6, 2009
April 7, 2009

  • Working Together Under the New OP Structure
  • Job Postings
  • Upcoming Events

This week's message continues the discussion about new efforts to examine how we work together at the Office of the President and information on the job postings, new appointments and upcoming events.

Working Together Under the New OP Structure

If you attended one of last week's brown bags, you saw the slide titled "Will the restructuring process ever end?" and heard that we are beginning to address issues around culture change including how we work together in this new organization.

As I mentioned last week, we convened several groups of managers to ask them what tools they think they need to better perform in this new environment. About 80 managers (49%) participated, and I appreciate their enthusiasm and creative ideas. Several themes emerged, including the need for baseline supervisory training and performance management training; the desire for informal discussions with their peers regarding management issues and to work in teams with colleagues in other OP units; more exposure to campuses, and a clear vision from senior leadership regarding core values and mission of OP.

Over the course of the next few months, we will be addressing many of these issues and expanding our conversations about training needs to other groups of OP employees. In the meantime, we have begun to work with UCSF HR to use their existing training resources and to develop new trainings specifically for OP staff. Given managers’ desire for performance management training and the importance of performance management as we redefine roles and establish new goals and objectives, UCSF HR will begin providing performance management training this month. The training is designed to assist managers and supervisors to:

  • Set Performance Expectations
  • Coach for Improved Performance
  • Appraise Employee Performance
  • Delegate for Success and Accountability.

Details about the schedule and how to register for the training sessions are available at the Learning Center. More information about Performance Management can be found on the UCSF HR website.
